It started in a clinic, with 1,700 dogs.
viggoVet wasn't dreamed up in a boardroom. It started inside a working veterinary practice that suddenly took on the care of 1,700 dogs.
The problem was simple. There were more patients than an experienced veterinary team could possibly handle alone.
A caseload that arrived overnight.
Dr. Michael Gerges had spent 14 years as a veterinary surgeon and had already built, grown and sold a veterinary clinic.
Then his practice took on the care of a charity organization with 1,700 dogs. Almost overnight, a small team's caseload became enormous.
They needed more veterinarians, but experienced vets were difficult to find and expensive to hire. Younger vets were available, but they needed the experience and clinical guidance that normally takes years to build.
The question became:
How do you give every veterinarian the clinical knowledge and guidance they need, right when they need it?
That question became viggoVet.
Two walls, and a two-year answer.
The obvious answer was to put better clinical guidance into the software veterinarians already used. It wasn't that simple.
The integration wall. Veterinary data was locked inside practice software that wasn't built for outside clinical tools. If we wanted to build something that could work with real patients, records and workflows, we first had to build the foundation ourselves.
The data wall. We weren't willing to train veterinary AI by scraping material from the internet or using data we didn't have the right to use. So we asked veterinarians directly.
More than 2,000 were contacted. More than 300 contributed clinical notes and records they owned. Combined with open scientific research, that grew into more than 8 million copyright-free items.
It took a small team nearly two years to clean the data and build the platform underneath it.
That work became the foundation of viggoVet.
We decided to solve the harder problem.
By the time the platform was ready, veterinary AI scribes were everywhere. We could have built another one.
We didn't.
We went back to the reason viggoVet existed in the first place: helping veterinarians with the difficult clinical work that happens after the conversation is recorded.
The surgery. The diagnosis. The treatment plan. The worried owner. The patient history that has to be understood in minutes. Those were the problems worth solving.
So viggoVet became an open veterinary platform. A clinic can start with one clinical tool alongside the software it already uses, add more when they are useful, or eventually run the entire practice on viggoVet.
No forced migration. No all-or-nothing decision.
Clinical AI also has to earn trust.
Building the tools raised another question:
How do we know veterinary AI is actually good enough to use in clinical practice?
There was no independent public benchmark built specifically to answer that question.
So we built VetEval.
VetEval evaluates veterinary AI against defined clinical standards, so performance can be measured instead of simply claimed.
What we're here to do.
Give every veterinary team access to better clinical tools, on whatever system they already use, so veterinarians can make better decisions, work with more confidence and spend more time caring for patients.
Self-funded since day one.
viggoVet was built without venture funding.
That gave us the freedom to spend years building the foundation before trying to sell the product. We could focus on the veterinarians using it, the clinical problems worth solving and building something we believed could actually improve veterinary medicine.
We built the foundation first. Then we brought it to market.
