The AI in the room: veterinary AI that shows up where the work happens (surgery, dental, and the road), alongside the Lupa practice software you already run.
Key takeaways
- viggoVet adds clinical AI in the rooms where decisions are made: the surgery, the dental suite, and the road. It runs alongside Lupa.
- Lupa stays your practice system. Bookings, records, invoicing, Lupa Pay, insurance claims and client communication stay where they are, along with Lupa's AI scribe, its Jerry assistant and its AI receptionist.
- Live now from viggoVet: AI Anesthesia Assist, AI Dental Chart and AI Remote Booking.
- Coming soon: VetEvince, the published veterinary evidence in your pocket and offline, and the AI Drug Formulary.
- Both companies believe in open software. Lupa publishes a public API, and viggoVet is built as an open platform. Different jobs, same conviction.
The idea: an AI in the room
A veterinarian once asked us a question that was not quite grammatical: if the AI is in the room now, how will it be? Most veterinary software was busy elsewhere, running the front desk or writing up the visit afterwards. So we went room by room through the clinic and asked what an AI would actually do in each one.
That is what viggoVet is: AI that acts at the moment of the decision, while the patient is still in front of you. It works alongside your Lupa practice. Lupa keeps running the practice well, and viggoVet brings clinical AI into the moments that carry the most risk.
In the surgery: AI Anesthesia Assist
Anesthesia carries some of the highest stakes of the veterinary day. In the largest prospective study of small animal anesthetic deaths, sick dogs (ASA 3 to 5) faced about a 1 in 75 risk of anesthetic-related death, against about 1 in 1,849 for healthy dogs (Brodbelt et al., Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia, 2008). Patient context changes everything.
AI Anesthesia Assist reads each vitals entry against the whole patient (breed, age, weight, conditions, current medications and protocol) and returns a stability or risk indication with a guideline-based comment, usually in 10 to 30 seconds. Vitals are entered manually today. It is advisory decision-support, not a monitor, alarm or device, and the veterinarian makes every call.
In the dental suite: AI Dental Chart
The hardest part of a dental is often the conversation about cost, not the procedure. AI Dental Chart turns tooth-by-tooth charting into the documents the case needs: a prognosis with a risk score, SOAP and dental notes, discharge notes, and a plain-language letter that explains to the owner what was found, what treatment involves, what it costs, and what waiting costs. The veterinarian reviews everything before it reaches the owner.
On the road: AI Remote Booking
For house calls, farm and equine work, and visiting specialists, AI Remote Booking arranges each day as a route: stops in travel order, drive time between them, and the total driving for the day on one map. Over the first 30 to 60 days it learns whether a vet prefers to start far or close, keeps bookings inside each vet's radius, and imports records uploaded at booking as a full patient profile.
What is Lupa, and what is it genuinely good at?
Lupa is a cloud-based, AI-native veterinary practice management system, founded in London in 2023 by Nicolò Frisiani, Matei Bjola and Raul Lozano Martin. It serves practices and multi-site groups in the UK and Europe and is growing in the US. In October 2025 it announced a $20 million Series A, bringing its total funding to $25 million.
Lupa is built to be the single system a practice runs on. Its features cover the whole visit: online booking and reminder sequences, health plans, consent forms, scheduling with rooms and rota, consultation records, lab orders with IDEXX, Zoetis and Laboklin, invoicing, Lupa Pay, insurance claims, inventory, a unified communications inbox, analytics, and a pet parent app. Practices that want one modern system with AI built in from the start have a strong option in Lupa.
Lupa also publishes public API documentation, describing "one authenticated REST API over everything a veterinary practice runs on." In a market where developers rate overall openness poorly (an average of 1.94 out of 5 in the 2026 Companion Animal Veterinary Software Guide), a published API is a real commitment, and one we respect.
What does Lupa's AI do?
Lupa's AI is concentrated in documentation, administration, billing and client communication:
- Lupa Notes, an AI scribe that listens to the consultation and writes structured clinical notes.
- Jerry, an assistant you can ask about a patient, including an AI pet summary.
- AI billing suggestions, which read the consultation and surface what should be on the invoice.
- An AI receptionist and AI calling, which answer calls, schedule visits and phone clients to book.
- AI marketing campaigns by email and phone.
Lupa has also launched a Veterinary AI Lab to develop new tools across the practice and collaborate with universities and researchers.
That is a strong core for running a practice and keeping the clinical record current. The specialty clinical moments, such as an anesthetic in progress, a dental case and the consent conversation that follows, or a mobile day on the road, are a different job. That is the job viggoVet does.
What viggoVet adds to a Lupa practice
viggoVet is clinical AI in the room, working alongside everything Lupa already does:
- AI Anesthesia Assist: an advisory stability or risk read at every vitals entry, checked against the whole patient.
- AI Dental Chart: tooth-by-tooth charting, prognosis, and the owner letter that earns informed consent.
- AI Remote Booking: the mobile day arranged as a route, with booking details and records captured up front.
- Evidence behind every answer: viggoVet's tools draw on more than 8 million copyright-free veterinary research items and clinical cases, shaped since 2021 by more than 300 practicing veterinarians, across 80+ species and 28+ languages.
How Lupa and viggoVet divide the work
The two work at different layers of the practice, which is why they fit together. This is a division of labor, not a comparison:
The practice layer: Lupa | The in-room clinical AI: viggoVet (added alongside) |
|---|---|
Booking, scheduling, rooms and rota | Surgery: AI Anesthesia Assist (advisory) |
Records, Lupa Notes (AI scribe) and Jerry | Dental suite: AI Dental Chart and the owner letter |
Invoicing, Lupa Pay, insurance claims, AI billing suggestions | The road: AI Remote Booking, the day as a route |
AI receptionist, communications inbox, pet parent app | Coming soon: VetEvince and AI Drug Formulary |
Together: Lupa runs the practice; viggoVet is the AI in the rooms. |

Does adding viggoVet change how your team uses Lupa?
No. Your team keeps working in Lupa exactly as it does today and opens viggoVet in the rooms where its AI helps. Adding viggoVet does not change your Lupa setup, records or workflows.
Your data stays yours: GDPR-aligned, end-to-end encrypted, stored in your region, and never used for AI training.
What's coming next
Two more viggoVet tools are on the way. VetEvince puts the published veterinary evidence in your pocket, offline: describe the case and what you are weighing, and it retrieves the research, sources one tap away. It is a reference, not a diagnosis. The AI Drug Formulary gives patient-aware dosing and checks interactions across everything a patient is on, covering 1,300+ medications and 8,000+ interactions.
FAQ
How does viggoVet work with Lupa? viggoVet adds clinical AI that runs alongside your Lupa practice. Your team keeps using Lupa for bookings, records, invoicing and client communication, and uses viggoVet in the surgery, the dental suite and on the road, where its AI helps at the moment of the decision.
Does adding viggoVet change my Lupa setup? No. viggoVet works on top of what you already run. Your Lupa records and workflows stay as they are.
How is viggoVet different from Lupa's AI? Lupa's AI focuses on running the practice and keeping the record current: an AI scribe, the Jerry assistant, AI billing suggestions, and an AI receptionist. viggoVet focuses on specialty clinical moments: anesthesia decision-support, dental charting with owner explanations, and mobile route planning, with evidence and drug tools coming. Many practices will want both.
Is the anesthesia feature a monitor? No. AI Anesthesia Assist is advisory clinical decision-support. At each vitals entry it returns a stability or risk indication with a guideline-based comment for the veterinarian to review. It is not a monitor, alarm or medical device, and the veterinarian makes every decision.
What can viggoVet do today? AI Anesthesia Assist, AI Dental Chart and AI Remote Booking are live. VetEvince and the AI Drug Formulary are coming soon.
Is my clinical data safe? Your data stays yours: GDPR-aligned, end-to-end encrypted, stored in your region, and never used for AI training.
