Patient Labs and Diagnostics
Reading time: 4 minutes
Lab results are central to clinical care. viggoVet gives you three ways to get them into a patient’s record: automatic import from integrated lab machines, AI-powered extraction from uploaded photos or PDFs, and manual entry for individual parameters. All results land on the patient’s Labs tab in a timeline view with color-coded indicators that make abnormal values easy to spot.
Opening the Labs Tab:
- In the main bar, under “accounts”, click on “patients”
- In the bar after the patient information top header, click on the Labs tab in the tab row (after Documents & Attachments).
The Labs tab shows a timeline across the top with date markers (e.g., “14/06/2024”, “09/03/2025”, “10/03/2025”) representing when lab results were recorded. Use the left and right arrow buttons to scroll through dates. You can reorganize the dates as ascending or descending, by clicking on the word to switch.
Understanding the Results Table
Each lab panel contains a table of individual test values. The columns are:
Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
Test | The parameter name (e.g., GLU, CRE, BUN) |
Result | The measured value |
Range | Whether the result is Normal, High, or Low |
Unit | The unit of measurement (mg/dL, g/dL, U/L, etc.) |
Scale (range) | A colored progress bar showing where the result falls within the reference range |
Range indicators use color to flag abnormal values at a glance:
Indicator | Color | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
Normal | Green | Within reference range |
High | Red | Above reference range |
Low | Orange/ Yellow | Below reference range |
The colored scale bars give a visual representation of how far the value sits within (or outside) the expected range.
Importing results from integrated lab machines
If your clinic uses an integrated machine (like IDEXX VetConnect), results are sent directly to viggoVet. They appear automatically on the Labs tab timeline. No manual step is required once the integration is configured.
Your administrator sets up lab machine integrations in Settings > Integrations
Importing a Lab Report with Our AI Tool
When you have a paper lab report or a PDF from another lab, you can use Viggo AI to extract the values automatically.
- On the Labs tab, click Import Lab Report (top of the page).
- The AI Lab Assistant sidebar opens on the right. It shows a greeting: “Hello I’m ViggoVet AI, Your AI assistant. I’ll help you extract lab details automatically.”
- Drag and drop your file into the upload area, or click Browse Photo to select a file.
- Supported formats: JPG, PNG, PDF.
- VIGGO AI scans the document, extracts individual test parameters, and creates a new lab entry on the timeline.
Tip: For best results, make sure the lab report photo is well-lit, flat, and in focus. Cropping out unnecessary borders or handwriting helps the AI read values more accurately.
Adding lab results manually
Use manual entry when you need to record a single test value or a small set of results that aren’t available as a file.
- On the Labs tab, click Add lab (dark button at the top).
- The Add Record modal opens with Record type set to Diagnostic.
- Select the Lab category from the dropdown (e.g., “chemistry”).
- Choose the specific Diagnostic parameter from the next dropdown.
- Enter the Value.
- Select or confirm the Vital Type Unit (the unit of measurement).
- Set the Date for when the test was performed.
- Click + Add Note if you need to attach additional context.
- To add more parameters in the same session, click + Add another record and repeat.
- Click Save when you’re finished.
Lab Panel Actions
Button | What function it serves |
|---|---|
Export | Downloads the lab result set as a file |
Import data file | Imports a structured data file from a compatible machine |
+ Add | Adds a new parameter to this existing lab panel |
Trash icon | Deletes the entire lab panel (use with caution) |
What to do if something goes wrong
AI extraction missed some values or got them wrong. Open the lab panel and use the + Add button to manually add missing parameters. For incorrect values, delete the entry and re-add it with the correct number.
Uploaded file was rejected by the AI assistant. Confirm your file is JPG, PNG, or PDF. If the file is too blurry or the text is too small, try scanning it again at a higher resolution or cropping to just the results table.
Lab results from an integrated machine aren’t appearing. Check that the integration is active in Configurations > Integrations. Confirm the patient’s record is linked correctly to the lab system. Contact your administrator if results still don’t arrive.
You don’t see the Labs tab. This tab may not be visible for all patient types or configurations. Ask your administrator to confirm the tab is enabled for your role.
Timeline shows no dates. The timeline only shows markers once results have been recorded. If no labs exist yet, the timeline will be empty.
Note: Contact the viggoVet help if any of these problems persist after following the instructions.
