AI Lab Report Parsing

Available onEliteEnterpriseProfessional

Reading time: 4 minutes

When lab results come as printed reports, faxes, or PDFs from external labs, you can upload them to viggoVet and let the AI assistant extract all the values automatically. Instead of manually entering each test result, upload the file and the AI reads it, identifies the tests, and populates the patient’s Labs tab with structured data including test names, values, units, and reference ranges.

Accessing AI Lab Report Parsing

  1. Open a patient profile.
  2. Click the Labs tab.
  3. Click Import Lab Report (button at the top of the Labs section).
  4. The AI assistant sidebar opens on the right side of the screen.

The AI assistant sidebar

When the sidebar opens, you see:

  • VIGGO AI avatar and greeting: “Hello! I’m VIGGO AI, Your AI assistant. I’ll help you extract lab details automatically”
  • Instructions: “Please upload a photo or file of the lab and I’ll scan it for you.”
  • Upload area: Drag and drop zone with a cloud upload icon
  • Browse Photo button: Click to select a file from your computer
  • Supported formats note: “Only Support: JPG, PNG, PDF Files”

How to use AI Lab Report Parsing

Step 1: Upload the report

Either:

  • Drag and drop the lab report file onto the upload area
  • Click Browse Photo to select the file from your computer

Supported file formats:

  • JPG (photo of printed report)
  • PNG (screenshot or scan)
  • PDF (digital lab report)

Step 2: AI processing

After uploading, the AI:

  1. Reads the document using optical character recognition (OCR)
  2. Identifies individual test parameters
  3. Extracts test names, result values, units, and reference ranges
  4. Structures the data for import

Step 3: Review and confirm

The extracted values appear for your review. Verify that:

  • Test names match your configured diagnostics
  • Values are correctly read
  • Units are appropriate
  • Reference ranges are accurate

Step 4: Save to patient record

Confirm the import and the lab results are saved to the patient’s Labs tab with all values properly structured in the results table.

Labs tab structure

After import, results display in a table showing:

Importing from integrated lab systems

If your clinic has IDEXX VetConnect or ZOETIS VetConnect integrations active, lab results flow in automatically without any manual upload or AI parsing. The AI import feature is specifically for reports from non-integrated labs or external sources.

Navigating lab history

The Labs tab shows results on a timeline with navigation arrows:

  • Date headers: Show when each set of results was recorded
  • Export button: Export results for sharing
  • Import Data File: Import structured data files directly
  • +Add new record: for adding a new lab result value
  • Trash icon: for deleting a record

What to do if something goes wrong

AI not extracting all values: The photo quality may be too low. Take a clearer photo with good lighting and no shadows. For PDFs, make sure the text is selectable (not a scanned image within a PDF).

Wrong values extracted: The AI may misread handwritten results or low-contrast printouts. Always review extracted values before confirming. Edit any incorrect entries manually.

Test names not matching: The AI maps extracted test names to your configured diagnostics. If a test name from the external lab does not match your system’s configured diagnostics, you may need to manually assign it.

File upload failing: Check that the file is JPG, PNG, or PDF format. File size may also be a factor for very large PDFs. Try uploading a single page at a time.

Results not appearing on the Labs tab: Make sure you confirmed the import after review. The results are only saved after you complete the process.

Note: Contact the viggoVet help if any of these problems persist after following the instructions.
